34 Resturant: Review

The bill is sure to come to more than 34 but as an experience, it hits all the right notes, especially considering there’s an in-house Jazz Pianist playing as you enter.

Situated just behind the famous Ivy in Mayfair, is the flag-bearing 34 Restaurant near the US embassy. If you’re looking for a steak in London, forget anywhere else – This is the restaurant to go to. The steak options on the menu aren’t particularly exotic, but they are of the highest quality, ranging from Scottish, American and Australian Wagyu all of which are cooked with care and precision.

If good honest steak is what the menu is most known for then its fish should be a close second. Echoing the seafood quality of its sister restaurant Scott’s, the Dover Sole and Lobster Macoroni all looked as good as they tasted according to the other diners in our party. Our dessert really was the icing on the cake. Almost literally. We shared a baked cheesecake with salted caramel truffles and washed it down with a glass of Taylor’s Vintage Port.

However, don’t overlook the sides though, as the 34 really comes into its own with an assortment of sides, such as the Cornish Crab with pink grapefruit and avocado pistachio, the Chargrilled Octopus with Moroccan spiced chickpeas, labneh cheese and harissa and the signature 34 shrimp cocktail.

We booked a table for a midweek meal and throughout our time there, we were enveloped in a low-lit, relaxed atmosphere, with an in-house jazz trio softly playing over the top of our conversation. We were incredibly well looked after; we were given thorough descriptions and recommendations of what were the most appropriate wines to accompany our food with and well as a smattering polite interjections throughout our meal to see if our overall experience was satisfactory.

To sum up our experience of the 34, it’s best to give the same response we gave our waiter; “Everything’s wonderful, thank you”. It really is a case of quality over quantity here and although you can expect a good meal to cost well over £100, we felt like it was an investment in our taste buds.
